Gorgeous George, Champagne Charlie and the decline of British politics
@ 2006-01-06 - 12:58:41Yesterday was probably the most surreal day ever for British politics. First Charles Kennedy announces that he's an alcoholic and calls a leadership election, then George Galloway enters the Celebrity Big Brother house!
So what does this all mean? Well, the subtext underneath the controversy around Kennedy's leadership of the Lib Dems is the battle between the neo-liberal "Orange Book" MPs in Westminster and the more left wing rank-and-file members in the country. If the MPs win, as they probably will eventually, then the gap between the three main parties will narrow even further and it will become even more difficult for critics of the neo-liberal concensus to make themselves heard in mainstream politics.
As for Galloway, his move into the BB house shows just what a money grubbing scumbag he really is. His excuse for not showing up at the important anti-terror votes was that he needed to raise money to pay for his election campaign, but how much is he getting paid for this? Everyone knows that the contestants in celebrity reality shows get paid hefty fees, and what "charity" will benefit from his phone vote money and any prize funds that he might win? One can only hope that Respect will have it's image severely tarnished by George's antics, but I think that the SWP will continue to make excuses for him.
It would be nice to think that the Labour left will benefit from the decline of these supposedly left wing paties but I'm not holding my breath. Still, I intend to get right behind champion heckler Walter Wolfgang in his campaign to get elected to the LP NEC.

Churchill was an alcoholic. Allegedly Mrs Thatcher consumes large amounts of Famous Grouse daily. One saved the country, the other partly destroyed it. Perhaps alcohol is not as relevant. Perhaps the whole anonymous sneaking campaign against Kennedy is just a power mad loony trying to gain control. But is it Ming the Merciless Campbell, or somebody else? We shall see...

The money 'grubbing' scumbag is donating his fee. I don't see why people get so angry about this man. For god sake he is one of the only voices in the public domain (and the only voice in parliament) to continually remind the establishment of the traversty that is Iraq. His party Respect, offers an alternative in the age of the 2 party, single idealogue state. Even if only for sthat reason, the man is a hero. Did you see his senate visit?

According to theyworkforyou.com, Galloway has only attended 15% of the votes in Parliament since he was elected and now he seems set to miss a debate on Crossrail, a huge issue in his constituency. So if he is a voice in Parliament, he's a very quiet one.
I'm not aware of Galloway issuing any statement to the effect that he is donating his personal fee to charity. A Palestinian NGO will benefit from his phone votes, but that's not his money.
Galloway's appearance in front of the Senate was a Charles I style excercise in avoiding answering the questions put to him by making long speeches questioning the committe's authority. The same tactic was used by his friend Saddam when he was brought to justice recently.
I have little doubt that Galloway received money from the old Ba'ath regime, albeit via an intermediary. Even if he didn't, his public support for a regime that murdered and tortured thousands of it's own people and started a long war with Iran that saw hundreds of thousands die on both sides is enough to damn him. He said that he was with Saddam "'till Jerusalem". I shudder to think what would've happened if Saddam's armies had ever reached Israel, given his murderous record with his own people and the Iranians. Most probably they would've finished Hitler's work.
